It was one of those rare days when Addie actually had more than one hour of free time. She normally spent any free time reading or studying, but lately she had felt like she had cabin fever. She was getting antsy doing the same drills and reading over the same passages, she needed a new challenge. She needed something to focus her mind. She had made her way to the weapons room and grabbed one of her favorite bows and arrows. She had planned on doing some target practice in one of the training buildings, but when she stepped into the warm sunshine and felt the cool air she decided to train outside.
The younger ones had been practicing archery the day before in the field of Mars so she knew there were a few targets still left up. She made the walk quietly, thinking and taking in the peace of it all. She hopped over a fallen limb and took care to not disturb the bow or arrows slung around her. It was natural walking like this now. It was natural to walk across a field with a weapon in her hand. She smiled a little thinking how much of a difference a few years could make. Instead of worrying over prom, grades, and boys she was thinking of her future and how it would benefit New Rome. She was thinking how she could give back, how she could lead and help. She couldn't imagine being one of those air-headed girls who measured their worth in if boys liked them or thought the world revolved around them, the world could be a silly little place sometimes.
She made her way to the targets and began setting up for the afternoon. She placed her feet squarely and got into position. Her arms were tense and the bow was taught, she took a deep breathe in and out, letting the cares of the week go. She released the arrow and watched quietly as it hit the center.
